Potato print some brown paper and transform it into bold and fun wrapping paper, ideal for wrapping paper for your Christmas presents. By simply using a potato, a cookie cutter and some paint it’s easy to create wrapping paper decorated with a star-shaped stamp. This is a great craft project to do with the kids, too – they will love stamping their very own unique designs onto the paper.

You can also go on to create matching gift tags and even Christmas cards for friends and family too. Experiment with different coloured papers and paint, and use other cutters you already have at home – the possibilities are endless, and this simple idea for making your own wrapping paper can be used all year round, too!

You will need:

1 On a chopping board, carefully cut a large potato in half. Place one half to the side. Position a star cookie cutter onto the cut potato and press down firmly. You may find it easier to turn the potato upside down, so the cutter is underneath against the board, then press down onto the potato.

2 Place the potato on its side, then take a sharp knife and carefully cut all the way around the potato up to the cutter. Use the sharp tip of the knife to cut into each section of the star. Pull away the excess potato and lift off the star cookie cutter.

3 Roll out some brown paper, use a weight to hold it in place. Pick up a little white paint on a paintbrush and apply it to the star shape you have just created in the potato. You don’t need much.

4 Press the potato star stamp onto the paper, making sure not to move it around. Lift the potato up and stamp again.

5 Keep applying paint and stamping stars all over the brown paper – you can use different size stars if you like – then leave it dry. You can stamp some gift tags at the same time, too.

6 Cut the paper down to the size of your gift, position the gift in the centre on the paper and wrap it neatly.

7 Cut a long length of twine, wrap it around the gift and secure it with a knot. Feed on a gift tag and finish with a bow. A sprig of foliage also gives a nice final flourish.

TIP - You can cut all sorts of different shapes from potatoes, either with a knife or a cookie cutter, just make sure you have a potato big enough!
